Sekhukhune United Football Club advanced to the quarterfinal stage of the Nedbank Cup on Friday night, following a 2-0 victory against Cape Town Spurs at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.
The game started with the host in control of possession for the most part and pinning the visitors in their half, with only a few wayward shots to show for early dominance.
The deadlock could have been broken in the 20th minute after some neat interplay between Chibuike Ohizu and Vusumuzi Mncube.
Babina Noko eventually found an opener through Victor Letsoalo’s swift counter-attack out on the edge of the Urban Warriors penalty area, as his well-placed shot left goalkeeper Lincoln Vyver rooted to the spot.
Sekhukhune United FC was awarded a penalty five minutes before the break, When Ohizu was fouled inside the Spurs box which summoned the referee to point to the spot, Roderick Kabwe slotted the ball into the back of the net to make it 2-0 to the host.
Despite being two goals ahead, Babina Noko continued to press on in search of a third goal in the second half.
The Urban Warriors almost hit back moments later through their first real opportunity, which was provided by Boitumelo Radiopane, whose header went narrowly wide of the target.
Cape Town Spurs did most of the defending in the second half and had sporadic counter-attacking moments with little end product.
Babina Noko kicked into the game management through their attacking substitutions of Sibusiso Vilakazi who made his debut for Babina Noko.
In the end, Sekhukhune United FC managed to book their place in the quarterfinals spot.
