Share of spoils in the season opener

Sekhukhune United Football Club put on a brave effort to secure a point in a 1-1 draw away to Maritzburg United FC at Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday night in the 2022/23 DStv Premiership season opener match.

The visitors controlled the tempo as they enjoyed more possession, but the hosts’ defense maintained its shape, depriving them of clear-cut chances.

Babina Noko got their opener 15 minutes into the first half after Tshegofatso Mabasa went clear on goal and scored into an empty net

The host kept applying pressure on the visitors in the second half, but Babina Noko’s defense remained resolute.

Maritzburg threw everything at Babina Noko and was awarded a penalty in the last five minutes after Ntiya-Ntiya brought down Brandon Theron in the box. Makume’s penalty was initially saved by goalkeeper Toaster Nsabata but Bongani Sam pounced on the rebound and fired home the equaliser for the Team of Choice.

In the end, both teams had to share the points. A point leaves Babina Noko in the 7th position in the DStv Premiership Log standings with 1 point.

Sekhukhune United Football Club will return to DStv Premiership action on Wednesday evening where they will be hosting Lamontville Golden Arrows at The New Peter Mokaba Stadium at 19h30.

XI: Nsabata, Mahlangu, Kabwe, Cardoso, Gyimah, Mntambo, Ntiya-Ntiya, Mokwana, Mabasa (Motsepe 71’) Letsoalo (Morris 69’) Mosiatlhaga (Masiya 69’)
